Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged , for The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. ~Joshua 1:9
Funny story…funny not so funny all at the same time.
This morning during my bible study time (my quiet time with The Lord) out of NOWHERE- well out of my pencil case actually, came scurrying a little (not so little) spider. *shivers*
Like WOW now. So I instinctively jump up out of my chair (with grace I might add- didn’t knock over my coffee, scream or trip on my chair while doing so. *pat on the back*)
If there’s one thing you don’t do Mr. Spider, it’s get in the way of a mamma’s quiet time with Jesus first thing in the morning.
Naturally, I would have packed up camp and found an other room to sit in but I was determined not to waste time moving all of my books and so I had to deal swiftly with this (BIG) black spider. (Extra big and fluffy- like in my opinion is was baby tarantula) Quick thinking- grab the box of kleenex, raise it above my heady all warrior like and BAM- smushed. Problem solved- fear resolved.
Now let’s get serious though. There are times in our spiritual walk that we can become consumed with fear and that can put up a really big wedge between ourselves and God:
Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of change, fear of being let down, fear of trying our best but still wondering it will be good enough, fear of unanswered prayer, fear of being hurt… this list goes on and on right? I’m sure you can come up with your own examples to share.
When we’re afraid we can have one of three reactions:
#One. We freeze, stand still, don’t move, close our eyes and pretend our fear isn’t there. I could have closed my eyes all I wanted this morning but I would have known that the spider was still running around in amongst my books and pencil case.
#Two. We can be moved to RUN and to run fast. But let’s face it. We can run all we want but if we don’t face our fear, it will always be there no matter how far or how fast we run. I could have run from the spider this morning but it would have still been in the kitchen somewhere, most likely, when I went back in to make breakfast.
#Three. We are moved to take action. We grab our weapons of warfare and we go to battle. We pray, we learn God’s Word, we stand on His truths and not on our feelings. (We grab the box of kleenex and squish the spider!)
What is holding you back from getting closer to God my friends?
Fear of change? Fear of not being good enough? Fear of those walls you so carefully put up around your heart coming down? Fear of letting others in? Fear of facing your hurts and your disappointments?
Is there a fear keeping you from all that God has for you? Don’t let fear rule you! Take a stand whether you feel like it or not. Lean in to God, and study His will for your life. Combat the fear (those lies!) with His truth today.
God is bigger than your fear. Seek Him and He will show you. He will bring healing. He will be your strength.
Grab your the kleenex box and annihilate that spider. Ok, ok… forget the about the spider- but seriously, grab the sword of the spirit and with God by your side, slay those giants in your life.
(I am NOT even kidding- I just looked up in front of my computer to see a tiny spider hang down in front of me- so small, I only had to reach up and pinch it between my thumb and finger. How fitting and how true that the more we face our fears, they eventually don’t even scare us anymore)
Be blessed my friends!
